Kilroy was Frank is the studio of Surrealist artist-couple Sammy Frank and Erin Kilroy. Based in Kent, their studio specialises in mythic mixed-media paintings and pioneering cyanotypes. Half Christian, half Sceptic, their work exploits the folding dimension of dreams to conjure new allegories for empathy and theology.

Every piece sold by Kilroy was Frank is an original artwork, handmade by the artist, and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. It is human through and through, with zero A.I. utilized at any point of its production or sale.

Cyanotype photography is a 180 year-old process where chemicals turn blue when exposed to sunlight, interjecting a negative to produce an image. Erin Kilroy’s innovative practice expands the potential of cyanotype, reinventing this traditional process with an inspired use of collage, paint, and material experimentation.

Sammy Frank’s artwork is a gentle mythology spun between painting and short story. Acrylic paintings, embellished with oil, gold leaf, and collage, weave the strong line and brushstrokes of Impressionist painters with the scoffing of chance by Dadaist poets. Branching from the core relationship between a Zebra Spider and a Sinking Hand, his work explores empathy for the alien and the cumulative effect of searching for similarity.

Erin Kilroy’s practice draws inspiration from the experiences and visuals of her dreams, the likeness of which her work aims to capture. And, like a dream-catcher, they are exposed to the sun and transformed by the light in a process called cyanotype.
